Rogers 10 Tips

When it comes to making our GDD, we need to make sure we have it right. James suggested we look into 'Rogers Guide to Game Design' to really help us. He told us to look at pages 71-89 and through that, we would have specific things we could apply to our own GDDs.

After looking through the pages, these are the parts I want to apply to my GDD the most:

10 pager outline.
Through this, I like the how I can gain a good idea on parts of my game that I should focus on when it comes to really trying to flesh out the idea overall. This includes things like:

  • Story summary

  • Character

  • Gameplay/ Controls

  • The worlds

  • Enemies (develop them more).

Introducing the gameplay

With this, I need to make sure I have the gameplay and mechanics of my game fully fleshed out. For my GDD I need to make sure I explain the idea of my game fully, so when it comes to the people who create my game, they will fully understand what I need them to do. This means I really need to make sure that I figure out how I want my game to play (In terms of walking around and POV etc).

The beat chart

When it comes to the beat chart, these are the aspects that are needed:

  •  Level/environment name

  •  File name (level/environment designation)

  •  Time of day (in context of the game)

  •  Story elements for level

  •  Progression: gameplay focus of the level

  •  Estimated play time of level

  •  Colour scheme of level/environment

  •  Enemies/bosses introduced and used

  •  Mechanics introduced and used

  •  Hazards introduced and used

  •  Power- ups found in level/environment

  •  New abilities, weapons, or gear introduced/unlocked

  •  Treasure amount and type the player can find

  •  Bonus material found in level/environment

  •  Music track(s) to be used in this level/environment.

The beat chart can also act as a guide for the GDD, showing us what elements could help (espcially when we are at a loss or what details to include). Seeing this list, I will make sure that I include these things within my main/finalised GDD not the GDDR.

Now, with all this in mind, I feel like I have more confidence when it comes to creating my finalised GDD. I have a good grasp on what I will want to include, what to think about when it comes to the story and creating characters and how to fully make it a fully fleshed out game plan.

I will continue to document the rough design of my GDD and then put in the finalised design of the document somewhere else (in it's own section as this one is going to get rather long).
