Dialogue Systems

When looking into the dialogue systems was quite helpful when it came to understanding how dialogue can be used in your game as not only a mechanic, but how it must have importance to the game overall.

We looked at how they can be formatted out in games like Dating sims (where they have a point system and based off the option you make, can lead to the different endings you can get (good ends vs bad ends). Thinking about how this could be applied to my game, this is what I was able to make:

So, this was then reviewed by my teacher. I tried to use my horror game as an example. Marvin suggested that if I was to have a Ranger as my main character, then you could have something like 'Fire-watch' where the characters interact with each other over the radio and you can choose how you talk to the people out of  a series of options. While talking with my teacher, I realised I had labelled my layers and nodes wrong. For every new interaction, I should've made a different layer. It still made sense to a degree and showed what I wanted to have: a good response, neutral and bad response.

Though I got the labelling wrong, it showed an idea of what I had for the game- the idea that there will be other characters that you can talk to. Morrison was just a place name for now- while I work out the main character etc, but it made me realise one thing. If I do want to have speech in my game, maybe it would be best to not have choices- to create a definitive character that you will play through and write out script examples to show the people who will  create this game, how it should go.

Here's another quick idea- if I made scripts of dialogue, I could even try and see about voice actor examples (I will cover this more in another page).

Overall, I am happy with my understanding of dialouges and how they can be intergal to a story in being able to explain the most important parts of the game and give  exposition that will make it easier to understand the overall story! My next way to develop this, will be to write a script.
