Part 1: Donut!

Now it was time for me to start my journey with the Blender Guru and Blender. He has a 24 video series for beginners to be able to make a donut and and cup of coffee. However, the first video was showing us the basics. How to use the simple short cuts to move, scale and rotate your object as well as a quick fun ending on how to do a fire effect on an object (yes, we set a monkey on fire).

It was really fun to learn the basics again. I came from using Maya (two years ago) with a small brief introduction last year when I made a little Lion in James's class. This time round, I felt a little more confident going into this. Knowing I could pause and rewind when I didn't understand something was also helpful as I could look at what Blender Guru was doing and then apply it to myself and what I was doing.

In the end I did about two hours of work on this donut (a total of around four videos- though I paused and rewound it.a few times to make sure I was doing it right). We started with the basic Torus shape and scaled it down to make it applicable to real world measurements. The Blender Guru said it's best to be able to  have the shapes be low poly and then add a subdivision texture over it to then smooth it out (this overall makes things nicer and look more appealing). We then made the donut look a little more 'imperfect' as donuts aren't made to be so round like how the computer was making them out to be.

"Imperfection is the virtual perfection"

As you can see, I made mine a little more bumpy- like it might've gotten a little squished in the package it was in. We then were taught how to add the icing (by being able to select the top half and duplicate it), before using the vectors to create the dribbling icing.

I still have a few more videos to go on making this donut (adding texture and colour), but so far I am really happy with what I made so far. On the bottom picture you can see part of the icing is a little off (and I was annoyed about it), so I might try and see if I can mess with it later to improve on it, but all in all, I think for a first time properly trying to create something, I think it is going very well.

I am looking forward to trying out the rest of it. Despite saying I would only do an hour a day, I might even have to up to to two hours as I felt like I was able to learn a lot more from two hours (I felt like if I stopped it after one or two videos, there wouldn't be much to show for it).

The next stages will be in different parts of the development journal.
