Music (The Start)

Music will be playing a key part in our game. We really wanted to capture an element of emotion by having it convey and invoke a feeling of isolation, as well as having it be 'robotic' to convey the twist of our game.

We had some examples within our presentation that we felt both conveyed the best examples of what we were going for,

Example 1:

The first example of music that we felt best could encapsulate the theme that Solum would have is Fallen Down by Toby Fox.

The style and workings of Toby Fox on his games Undertale and Deltarune are paramount to inspiration in style and execution and Marvin and I both agree that it is very much the style that we would really want our game to have. We like the idea of our game having an emotionally invoking melody that is captured in a sound that is described as chiptune, ambient, orchestral, acoustic, lo-fi, classical, techno, dance, and even alternative rock. This robotic, lo-fi/ chiptune theme is EXACTLY how we would imagine Solum to sound, so Toby Fox is the first go-to when we talked with the music students.

Example 2 & 3:

In second, we have Hello World by Louie Zong. I am also putting in the third song as they both share the same context and that is Therefore You & Me by Eve ft. 38Ban. We added both of these examples because it both has a chiptune element to them as well as has the auto-tune voices that could play into the idea that we wanted of Abel being a robot. We really liked the idea of this possibly being used for an open/ ending theme- much like the idea of Omori having the end-scene song of My Time by Bo-En and how the song was used in the trailer too and that set the overall scene for the game.

We really liked this idea, but Marvin and I agreed that when talking to the Music students, this would only be a possible song along with foley as we wanted to focus on having music in the four main areas of our game.

We were able to talk with the music students after the presentation! It went great! We had about four students interested in making music for our game. We were hoping someone would be able to take on foley, but it seems we are struggling to get someone interested to do it personally as they mainly want to focus on the main score or the stage music (which is completely fine). Marvin and I are now figuring out whom we want to best take forward to do music with us. We have been given their contact info via being able to message them on Discord and also have some examples of their work.

Personally, I am a little nervous about this. These students will be making music for us in their free time, so I really want to make sure we get back to them soon, so we can establish a good professional relationship with them and create something incredible!
